Uncle Joe's Mint Balls are a unique English boiled
sweet, which have been made in Wigan, Lancashire, England, -
by William Santus & Co. Ltd.- since 1898 - they are additive
free, and contain only three ingredients, pure London
Fourths brown cane sugar - (So called because of it's four refining
processes) - the finest American peppermint oils, - and cream
of tartar
These three simple ingredients, combined with an all important,
secret recipe, and boiled in pans over open gas fires,
give the rich brown colour, and unique taste, of an Uncle Joe's
Mint ball - for, as the temperature of the mixture reaches 320f
, it begins to turn from it's original "milky coffee"
colour - to the rich dark brown of the finished sweet.
The molten mixture is then poured out on to a water filled metal
cooling table, and the highly concentrated peppermint oil is
then added, by hand - this permeates throughout the mass of toffee,
as it is kneaded and turned, before being formed into a serpentine
shape, to be fed through drop rollers, and be stamped out, into
the familiar mint balls.
From here they go through wrapping machines, and finally the
wrapped sweets are put into various types of packs ready for
distribution throughout the North of England and beyond.
Though availability of Uncle Joe's Mint Balls is still limited
outside the company's main trading area of Northern England,
the option of mail order through Uncle Joe's Postal Service
now gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy these wonderful sweets
wherever they live - the following pages tell you how to get
them.
